Optimization and qualitative comparison of two vinasse pre-treatments aiming at microalgae cultivation

ABSTRACT The cultivation of microalgae is a possible destination for vinasse, residue from the sugar and alcohol industry. This use can help reduce costs production remediate this rich in nutrients. However, physicochemical characteristics vinasse limit its growth at low concentrations, except when pretreated. work aimed optimizing pretreatments centrifugation adsorption by smectite clay activated charcoal on laboratory scale terms amounts materials used time spent, making them more viable larger scales. optimized processes were then compared productive, economic, environmental terms. dilution treated with distilled water resulted similar Chlorella vulgaris to those obtained BG11 medium, indicating that addition nutrients culture media not necessary. Although occurs higher concentrations adsorption, results show required less processing time, has cheaper costs, generated much residue. Centrifugation treatment greater economic viabilities was sustainable than even though algae did grow centrifuged as high it after treatment. Therefore, article brings new view about aspects pretreated microalgal growth, giving lucrative highly polluting waste.
